    Altec 291-16B

I just purchase an Altec 291-16A driver that will have to go to GPA for a new diaphram and remagnetizing .What is wanted out of the driver is maximum sensitivity , it is to be used with a crystal radio with no amplification .Right now a Trim horn with a 12" bell is mated to a sound powered elementand it produces sound levels on a loud station that can be heard clearly for twenty feet .

I will be using two UTC-LS 12's as matching transformers and will have an input impedance of 240,000 ohm and an output impeadance of 24 ohms into the driver.

What would be the best horn to mate with this to get maximum volume .

    Interesting project....

No big deal, you mention 291-B in the title but you actually bought an A.

The only reason I point this out is there is a substantial difference, th B has a much larger magnet and other differences.

In addition to volume, you also want as full range as possible. For that reason I'd recommend a 300 HZ horn.

A more directional horn is going to concentrate more power in front of it and less to the sides. A 203 series might be an option there.
It's also got a nice funky appearance that would go well cosmetically...

If you are willing to travel a couple hours or can talk the guy into shipping, this is next door in Kansas...

Very cool project! Hope you get the 203 horn.

Of course something like the WE 15A horn would be ideal - but giant horn, big bucks.

EDIT: I was thinking about your 240K:24R transformer. That's a winding ratio of 100:1, right?
It's surprising that there is enough voltage on the secondary to get anything out of the horn. Is that what you are using now?
I had a crystal set as kid, worked fine with headphones. Never thought about a horn and driver. Cool.

No problem on the typo, just wanted to clarify. Sorry if I offended.

The 291 will bolt right on to the 203, and a 24 ohm fram will fit the 291 you bought

288 C and 291A are the same magnet just fram differences.

Great Plains Audio has real Altec frams, and magnet recharge was free last ones they did for me, I think that is still their policy...call to ask.

    Hey Mark,

Sometime we should talk about the single 288C (and 803B) I have laying around....
